Fellow Democrats,

After the June 2010 election results of Proposition 14, elections will now follow an open primary system in which only the top two vote-getters advance, even if they are from the same political party. Because of the need for OCYD to potentially lend support to its endorsed candidates earlier than it normally would and with the California Democratic Party Annual Convention this February, OCYD has decided to consider early endorsements in select races.

The first endorsement meeting of 2012 is scheduled for

Thursday January 12, 2012: 7:30pm

Bistro 400 400 W 4th St, Santa Ana, CA 92701-4531

Below, you will find the list of races that we will endorse in:

45th Congressional District

46th Congressional District

47th Congressional District

69th Assembly District

72nd Assembly District

To obtain OCYD’s endorsement, candidates must obtain 60% of the vote of present eligible members. Voting will take place by secret ballot. Each candidate will have 5 minutes to address our membership before the vote. To check if you are eligible to vote, please email us at info@ocyd.org to confirm your membership status.

Candidates seeking OCYD’s endorsement have the opportunity to submit a 250 statement by no later than Monday, January 9th. These statements will be emailed to our membership on Tuesday, January 10th. They will also appear on the printed ballots. Please submit statements to jose@ocyd.org.

If a candidate seeking OCYD’s endorsement cannot attend the meeting they may send a representative to speak on their behalf. Representatives of a candidate must be submitted to jose@ocyd.org prior to the meeting by an official campaign representative.

OCYD will make a good faith effort to contact all the candidates to notify them of this endorsement meeting.

Orange County Young Democrats Plan Public Forum and Rally

Santa Ana, Calif. – March 8, 2011 – Orange County Young Democrats is denouncing the violent verbal attack of Muslim families at a February 13th fundraiser held by the Islamic Circle of North America Relief. Anti-Islamic stereotyping, attacks on children, and a propensity for violence are some of the grievances raised by OCYD.

A video posted to Youtube by C.A.I.R., the Center for American-Islamic Relations, shows citizens and elected officials protesting the event broadly stereotyping Muslims as terrorists. This generalization is completely false, can lead to violence towards Muslims and needs to be stopped immediately.

Anger and verbal violence were also visible at the protest. After a series of anti-Islamic statements by Rep. Gary Miller (R 42), Rep. Ed Royce (R 40), and Villa Park City Councilwoman Deborah Pauly, the protest manifested itself into abusive verbal attacks on US citizens, women, even children who are clearly not affiliated with any type of terrorism.

Nick Anas, Chair of OCYD states, “There is no separating our elected officials’ participation in this rally and the ensuing violent verbal attacks on families and children. These officials should denounce intolerance and violence, not encourage it.”

Today, it has been exactly two months since the shooting of Rep.Gabrielle Giffords. In that context, OCYD is asking our Orange County community and it’s elected officials to immediately stop using violent rhetoric in our public discourse. We cannot ignore the fact that this type of hate speech can be the catalyst for instable individuals to commit violent actions.

During the decisive six weeks leading up to the November 2nd 2010 election, the Orange County Young Democrats (OCYD) implemented a wide-ranging voter turnout campaign entitled “Do It Again 2010!”

Over the past year OCYD has developed itself into a leading political organization in Orange County. In early September, OCYD took an unprecedented step among the first Young Democrat chapter in California by hiring an Executive Director. Beyond the regular duties of internal chapter management and goal fulfillment planning and execution, Executive Director Doug Arseneault was responsible during the campaign for recruiting, training and managing the volunteer and paid campaign team members.

Through extensive leadership development, chapter building, and infrastructure developments OCYD positioned itself to execute this extensive and ambitious paid and volunteer walk program.

Thanks to the generous contributions of individuals and organizations donors, in addition to the initial investment by OCYD itself, the campaign employed 42 Democratic college students and young professionals. Working a total of 277 canvassing shifts consisting of over 1,100 hours of canvassing and phone banking, the dynamic and committed campaign team contacted 13,259 voters over the brief six weeks, as well as provided logistical and administrative support to several diverse campaigns. The total cost of the campaign reached $15,000, with over $12,000 distributed directly to young Democrats.
